The Minister of Information and National Orientation Agency, Idris, has highlighted the importance of national branding, describing it as a vital asset alongside financial, natural, and mineral resources.
Speaking at the Nigeria Reputation Management Group launch, Idris stressed the need for Nigeria to assess its strengths and weaknesses to enhance its global reputation.
Idris pointed out that a robust national brand can attract investments, talent, and tourism, while a poor reputation can hinder progress.
He noted the Nation Brands Index as a critical benchmark for countries’ reputations, referencing Japan’s rise to the top in 2023.
He emphasised that Nigeria’s cultural strengths, particularly in music and literature, can be crucial in building a positive brand.
On his part, the minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, also spoke, urging Nigeria to tell its own story honestly and optimistically.
He called for a proactive approach to managing the country’s reputation, highlighting the role of citizens in shaping the national image.
Tuggar further emphasised the government’s efforts to improve citizens’ lives and uphold good governance as part of President Bola Tinubu’s 8-point Agenda, noting that national reputation is closely tied to these reforms.
He also praised Nigeria’s Technical Aid Corps, which has sent Nigerian professionals to African, Caribbean, and Pacific countries since 1987 as part of its efforts to expand its global influence.
