The Abia state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has backed the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, in demanding good governance and accountability from the Labour Party-led administration in the state.
At the weekend, Kalu, an APC member, tackled Alex Otti’s Labour Party government over issues of transparency and accountability, declaring that his party would take over the state in the 2027 general election.
Expressing support for the deputy speaker’s claims, the Abia state APC, in a statement by its Acting Publicity Secretary, Uche Egboka, reiterated its commitment to rescuing the state from “poor governance.”
“The All Progressives Congress (APC), Abia State Chapter, has observed with concern the growing tension and unwarranted mudslinging directed at the person of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, following his remarks during the road commissioning at the Aba Township Stadium on October 3rd, and his subsequent engagement at Abia Hotels, Umuahia, on October 5th, 2025.
“His statements, which bordered on the issues of transparency, accountability, and good governance in the Labour Party, led by the Abia State Government, have been met with needless personal attacks instead of constructive engagement.
“The APC in Abia State stands firmly with the Deputy Speaker in his position that, based on available records, the Abia State Government has received an average of N38 billion monthly between April and June 2025 as total revenue.
“Based on empirical evidence, the number and scope of ongoing projects in the state are not commensurate with the over N1 trillion received since the inception of the present administration. The Abia APC, therefore, aligns with the Deputy Speaker’s call for more transparency and the execution of projects that truly reflect the huge funds received and impact the lives of Abians,” the statement read in parts.
The Party demanded an investigation into the N54 billion allegedly spent on renovating 51 public schools in 2024, which has remained controversial.
It supported the Deputy Speaker’s demand for the payment of outstanding gratuities and the full implementation of the national minimum wage, as the Federal Government approved and signed it into law.
“The Abia APC reiterates its commitment to rescuing the state from poor governance. We share in the Deputy Speaker’s confidence that the All Progressives Congress will take over the leadership of Abia State come 2027 through the people’s collective will.
“The APC remains committed to aligning with the Federal Government to promote good governance, accountability, and the welfare of all Abians,” the statement concluded.
