Arsène Wenger, FIFA’s Chief Global Football Development, has lauded the “unbelievable” intensity and competitiveness of the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, ahead of Sunday’s final between hosts Morocco and Senegal.
Speaking at a workshop with the tournament’s Technical Study Group (TSG) in Rabat on Friday, “Le Professeur” praised the high physical and mental levels displayed by the competing nations.
“I would say overall, the competition was very intense, and it’s a characteristic of modern football. The intensity was very high. The mental attitude of all the teams was very strong, and the physical level was absolutely unbelievable,” Wenger stated.
The former Arsenal manager highlighted the narrow gap in quality between teams, making predictions difficult, but noted the technical maturity of the two finalists. He also expressed his satisfaction that all four semi-finalists were led by African coaches, viewing this as a sign of significant progress on the continent.
Wenger concluded by commending the TSG’s meticulous analytical work, stressing its vital role in shaping the future of African football.
