President Bola Tinubu says his administration is committed to strengthening federal universities through improved funding, research support, and partnerships with industry stakeholders to produce skilled manpower, drive innovation, and contribute meaningfully to national transformation and global competitiveness.
President Tinubu stated this at the 37th convocation of Federal University of Technology (FUTO), Owerri, Imo State.
Represented by the vice chancellor of David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, Uburu, Ebonyi State, Prof.J esse Uneke, the President said the federal government had embarked on reforms geared towards revitalising higher education in the country.
He asked the tertiary schools in the country to pursue sustainable funding to tackle pressing infrastructure challenges.
“Since the inception of the present administration, we have embarked on reforms geared towards revitalising higher education in Nigeria. We are working in partnership with our Universities to improve funding, upgrade infrastructure, support curettage research and enhance the welfare of staff and students.”
He noted that the convocation ceremony, by its nature and character, is a testament of hard work, perseverance and commitment to academic excellence, which has earned the students the prestigious degrees of the University.
“Our Universities remain a vital national asset in advancing growth and development. The administration of President Bola Tinubu is ever committed to strengthening institutions through improved funding, research support and partnerships with industry stakeholders to ensure they continue to produce skilled manpower, drive innovation and contribute meaningfully to national transformation and global competitiveness.
“Key major interventions of the FG in our universities include increased investment in infrastructure, especially in the area of development of solar energy solutions to power Federal Universities through the Energising Education Program (EEP).”
He commended parents for the sacrifices endured and resources invested in their children to acquire a University education with the requisite skills to become not only useful to themselves, but also contribute to Nigeria and the global community.
The Chancellor of the University, HRH Alhaji Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Musdafa, commended the institution for leading the vanguard of institutions dedicated to technological education and training in Nigeria in the last four decades.
He commended the 8th substantive vice-chancellor of FUTO, Prof (Mrs)Nnenna Oti for taking the University to unprecedented heights in academics, research and innovation.
The vice chancellor, Prof Nnenna Oti said that the 37th Convocation ceremony of the institution demonstrates their unwavering commitment to academic excellence in the pursuit of knowledge.
She enumerated some of the challenges facing the University to include, lack of staff quarters, deplorable state of the road network, lingering incessant encroachment by land grabbers adding that no level of subterfuge nor intimidation would make the University cede any part of her legitimate space to anybody.
