Kwara State government has reiterated its commitment to delivering universal health coverage to the people of the state.
The commissioner for Health, Dr Amina Ahmed El-Imam, stated this in Ilorin, the state capital, during a programme marking the 2026 World Health Day.
El Imam described the 2026 celebration as a moment to reflect on progress and strengthen collaboration towards improving public health outcomes.
Highlighting the state’s achievements, the commissioner said that consistent investment and collaboration with development partners had led to improved healthcare delivery, especially for vulnerable populations across the state.
She cited findings from the 2023 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, which showed that the state recorded the lowest under-five mortality rate of 14 deaths per 1,000 live births, high immunisation coverage, and increased utilisation of maternal health services, with antenatal care attendance at 96.8 per cent and facility-based deliveries at 77.6 per cent.
El- Imam, however, described the upgrading of the General Hospital Ilorin into a Teaching Hospital as a milestone that would enhance healthcare service delivery, workforce development, and research capacity
She called on residents of the state to adopt healthy lifestyles and support government initiatives, while urging health workers to remain committed to delivering quality care.
She also appealed to researchers, traditional and religious leaders, development partners, civil society organisations, and the media to strengthen collaboration and promote accurate health information.
Also speaking, the regional director of the World Health Organisation (WHO) for Africa, Dr Mohamed Janabi, called on African governments to increase investment in science, research and innovation as a critical pathway to achieving health security and sustainable development across the continent.
Janabi, speaking through the WHO state coordinator, Dr Emmanuel Eyitayo, emphasised the importance of science in improving health outcomes and addressing emerging health challenges.
