In a rapidly evolving global fashion industry, it is crucial for Africans to embrace their traditional styles while incorporating modern elements, a fashion expert, and co-founder, Love Your Own Nigerian Style, LYONS, Adebukunola Mobolaji Olukoya.

During a recent interview, Adebukunola emphasized the importance of balancing traditional and modern fashion concepts to create a unique and diversified African identity in the fashion world.

She explained that embracing one’s heritage while adapting to modern trends is a powerful way to showcase Africa’s rich cultural heritage on a global stage.

Adebukunola highlighted the significance of traditional African clothing, which often tells stories and represents specific tribes, cultures, or regions.

She also shared her journey of her humble beginnings, where she sold clothes from her car trunk, but, “she has now set her sights on a mission that goes beyond fashion—it’s about becoming a billionaire through African fashion.”

She said: “The continent is teeming with talent, creativity, and a rich cultural tapestry that is second to none. My conviction is rooted in the untapped potential of this industry.

“By creating a brand that resonates with people worldwide and by mastering the art of creating quality, yet affordable fashion, I am confident that the African fashion business has the potential to catapult me to the pinnacle of success.

“While Africa certainly faces economic challenges, it’s important to recognize that there’s a diverse spectrum of purchasing power across the continent.

“There’s a growing middle class with disposable income that is increasingly interested in fashion. I focus on making my designs affordable without compromising quality. Moreover, by exporting to countries with stronger currencies, we leverage exchange rates to our advantage, making our products accessible to a global market. This approach has proven successful, allowing us to thrive even in challenging economic environments.

“Embracing African fashion is about bridging the gap between traditional and modern styles. I design fashion that’s a blend of cultural heritage and contemporary aesthetics. It’s essential to create pieces that cater to a diverse range of tastes, from the traditionalists to the modern enthusiasts. By showcasing the beauty and versatility of African fashion, we aim to remind Africans of their rich heritage and inspire them to take pride in their roots.

“Distribution is one of our strengths. We have a network of local and international partners that allow us to reach customers across the globe. Our focus on e-commerce has also expanded our reach, making our products accessible to customers worldwide.

“When it comes to marketing, storytelling is key. We use our brand to tell the story of Africa, from the vibrant patterns to the intricate craftsmanship. Additionally, collaborating with influencers and fashion ambassadors who resonate with our mission has significantly enhanced our marketing efforts.
Branding, on the other hand, is about consistency.

“We strive to maintain high standards of quality, customer service, and creativity, reinforcing our brand’s reputation for excellence. Our commitment to creating a unique experience for our customers helps us stand out in the market.

“Nigeria’s fashion industry is indeed thriving, and it’s exciting to see the passion and innovation of fellow entrepreneurs. What sets us apart is our commitment to creating affordable fashion without compromising quality.

“We’ve positioned ourselves as a brand that bridges the gap between luxury and mass-market fashion. Our dedication to promoting African pride and heritage also distinguishes us, as we aim to inspire people to embrace their roots through fashion. Additionally, our global reach and export capacity provide us with a unique advantage, allowing us to tap into a broader market.

“There are several notable billionaires who have achieved global success in the fashion industry. One of my inspirations is Ralph Lauren, the founder of the Ralph Lauren Corporation. He built an iconic brand known for its classic American style, and his name is synonymous with timeless elegance. Another inspiration is Giorgio Armani, the Italian fashion designer, whose brand represents sophistication and luxury.”
