The Conference of Professionals in the Peoples Democratic Party (CP-PDP) has alleged the All Progressives Congress (APC) coerced Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to join their party as a gateway for total control of the treasury and resources of the state.

CP-PDP further claimed that the Delta situation was part of APC’s vicious move to further impoverish and subjugate Nigerians, decimate opposition, muffle dissenting voice, undermine the democratic sovereignty of the people and pave way for the imposition of a totalitarian and oppressive one-party regime in Nigeria.

Protem chairman of CP-PDP, Barr. Obinna Nwachukwu, said information at the disposal is that APC leaders blackmailed Governor Oborevwori to defect to the APC as a condition to end the unwarranted harassment of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa with the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

He also alleged that the APC leaders have upscaled their demand to include surrendering of significant control of Delta state oil wells to APC Cabal in Abuja.

“There are also allegations of plots by the APC to ensure total control of the Delta state resources, by demanding that Governor Oborevwori should rejig his government and hand over sensitive positions to the Cabal to fill with core APC members.

“This is in addition to alleged insistence by the APC Cabal to take complete control of the state by implementing what it called the “Lagos Option”, where defectors are not guaranteed tickets for the 2027 general elections.

“This undemocratic annexation script which started in Rivers state and now extended to Delta state is apparently part of APC’s scheme to “capture” the Niger Delta and sequester to the resources of the Niger Delta region to the detriment of the people of the region and Nigeria in general.

“It is clear that the APC is not ready for a free, fair and transparent electoral contest having been rejected by Nigerians due to its misrule which has worsened in the last two years.

“As professionals and patriotic Nigerians, the CP-PDP firmly condemns such underhand tactics by the APC which is aimed to divert public attention from its misrule and abysmal failures, weaken Constitutional Democracy, whittle the electoral rights of Nigerians and perfect a domineering and oppressive one-party rule in our country.”

The Conference however cautioned that such an approach by the APC is capable of derailing and pushing Nigeria’s democracy with its gains of justice, freedom, accountability and the Rule of Law to the precipice.

The CP-PDP called on all patriotic Nigerians to save the country’s democracy by resisting these “anti-democratic tactics and strategies of the APC which is now manifesting in Delta State.”
