Niger state Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has given more insight into what led to the killing and abduction at the Kasuwan Daji Market in Borgu local government area of the state last week.
The Governor, who spoke in an interview after paying a courtesy call on the Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Mohammed Dantoro, said the market was notorious for the sales of rustled cattle.
He said it was on that strength that the rival Bandits group attacked the market last week, slaughtering people, saying, “It is unfortunate this is happening again in less than two months, now that people were murdered and slaughtered in market square”
“This market is called Kasuwan Daji. Kasuwan Daji is a market of thieves. By definition, stolen cattle are sold in the forest, so this is what happened. It is an attack by a bandit group in a market where rustled cattle are sold “, he claimed.
According to him,” the most important thing is that people were killed. Now we know the crux of the matter, we are here to caution the Emirate council on their role to give accommodation to those whom they don’t know to settle, and in turn they come with dangerous weapons, ideology, extremism and Boko haram to commit heinous crimes.”
On the way forward, he said the villagers around Kainji Lake forest have been instructed to move out within the next two months to allow security agencies to flush out criminal elements in the area.
He said there will be collateral damage if the villagers refuse to relocate from the area and embrace the government and Emirate resettlement plan.
The Governor said it was a wake-up call for the Emirate council to not allow people to come and settle in their domain without a background check into who they are and where they are coming from.
LEADERSHIP reported that a terrorist group suspected to be Bandits last week attacked Kasuwan Daji Market, killing 42 people, abducting scores and looting shops.
