A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Hon. Innocent Ajaelu, has declared his support for the clamour for a new constitution for the country.

Ajaelu, who disclosed this in an interview with LEADERSHIP in Port Harcourt on Friday, said the current 1999 Constitution, which was written by the military, has become obsolete.

He stated that considering the fact that the country has been able to sustain over 20 years of democratic rule, there was a need for a new constitution for the country.

The Rivers APC chieftain said: “I support the call for the review of the 1999 Constitution because as at the time it became effective, Nigeria’s democracy was new. As time revolves, things have changed.

“I think the constitution of any given country should be made in a way that it will accommodate the current situation of any given country. I am of the view that certain things should be reviewed so that the Nigerian people would actually enjoy the constitution of their country.

“I can say for free that partly what we are seeing today as the constitution of Nigeria was hurriedly put in place by the military. You know what that means, the military cannot give us what democracy will operate upon.

“Now that we have stayed 20 years counting in civilian rule, I think it is important we review the constitution so that at least, modern day happenings will be embedded in the constitution of Nigeria.

“Secondly, I want Nigerians to know that actually we are not implementing the 1999 Constitution. Nigerians should implement this current constitution to its fullest.”
