The Coalition of Civil Society on National and Community Security Development, representing the impartial conscience of the nation, have urged President Bola Tinubu to carefully consider the appointment of his National Security Adviser (NSA).

The coalition at a press conference in Abuja, on Monday, emphasised the need for a knowledgeable, innovative, and experienced individual who understands the complex security challenges facing Nigeria.

In a statement jointly signed and read by the Convener, Romanus Azubuike Ugwu, who is also the Executive Director,
Centre for Strategy Ethics and Value, and Danladi Garba Isaac, Executive Director of The People’s Care And Advocacy Initiative (TPCAI), said the National Security Adviser serves as the chief advisor to the President on matters of national security and plays a vital role in managing the country’s security apparatus.

Given the current security situation in Nigeria, characterised by issues such as banditry, kidnapping, farmer-herdsmen clashes, illegal mining, oil bunkering, and cybersecurity threats, the coalition stressed the urgency of appointing a proactive and bold individual capable of transformative change in the security architecture.

“We need a tried and tested hand who has transformed or built a national security and diplomatic outfit. There is no time for theoreticians and office workers. It is urgent and critical,” emphasized Ugwu, the Convener of the Coalition.

Highlighting the multifaceted nature of security challenges, the coalition also drew attention to economic security, including the management of multinational agreements, natural resource availability, and the freedom to choose policies that can develop the nation’s economy in line with market forces.

The coalition further emphasised the importance of cybersecurity, as unauthorized access to critical governmental infrastructure can pose a serious threat to national security.

They urged President Tinubu to prioritize expertise in this area when selecting the NSA.

“We urge and appeal to Mr. President to shun politics in this vital appointment and consult widely for a logical conclusion by putting a round peg in a round hole in his choice as National Security Adviser,” they said.

President Tinubu, known for his vast political experience, was commended for his prompt handling of recent national issues and for fostering dialogue and consensus-building.

The coalition expressed confidence that the President would make a pragmatic appointment, considering the gravity of Nigeria’s security challenges.
