The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has approved the award of contracts for constructing two new magistrate courts in the Asokoro and Garki districts of the Federal Capital City.
The courts are set to be completed within 15 and 18 months, respectively, marking a significant step towards improving legal infrastructure in the region.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who presided over the meeting, emphasised that these approvals align with President Bola Tinubu’s renewed agenda to enhance service delivery across the FCTA.
The coordinator of the FCTA Satellite Town Development Department (STDD), Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, briefed journalists after the meeting and disclosed further approvals, including the ratification of contracts for two multi-event sports centres in Abuja, which are expected to be completed within 12 months.
In addition to the judicial and sports facilities, the executive committee also approved the construction of a 33 KV power supply line from Dawaki to Bwari, alongside a solar street lighting system for Arab Road and the U-shaped road connecting to Arab Road, which is due for completion within six months.
The contract sum for the approved 33 KV power supply and solar street lights is N3.065 billion, while that of the magistrate court in Asokoro and Garki districts is N7.6 billion and N6.3 billion, respectively.
This initiative aims to improve security in satellite towns, particularly during nighttime.
While briefing on security infrastructure, the FCT director of Security Services, Adamu Gwary, noted that the meeting also addressed critical memos from the Security Services Department to enhance community safety.
He highlighted a commitment made by the FCT Minister during a previous visit to area councils, which included the construction of new police divisional offices.
“This latest round of approvals will see the establishment of six divisional headquarters and accompanying staff quarters in Kuje, Gwagwalada, and Kwali Area Councils, totalling approximately N3.648 billion.
“The facilities include the divisional headquarters and six-man staff quarters for the police operatives in Kuje Area Council, Gwagwalada Area Council and Kwali Area Council. This aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda by providing effective, efficient and adequate security for the residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
“This is a milestone in providing security infrastructure, and it is a promise this administration will continue to fulfil,” he said.
Furthermore, the Head of Service, Mrs Grace Adayilo, said a memorandum seeking approval for a comprehensive all-risk insurance policy to safeguard the FCTA’s movable and immovable assets for 12 months.
“It might interest you to note that the policy aims to safeguard the FCTA’s assets against various risks, including damage, loss or disruption. This will ensure government business continuity and minimise financial losses in unforeseen incidents.
“Furthermore, this memo or memorandum is a directive from the federal government under an act dated 21st July 2018, mandating the compulsory insurance of government assets, properties, buildings under construction and public funding. It falls under sections 64 and 65.
“So the memorandum was presented, and the contract was approved by His Excellency the Honorable Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike,” she said. The value of the insurance is N795,067,438.99.
