Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has tasked the newly elected chairmen of the six area councils to prioritise accountability, transparency and grassroots development, warning that residents expect tangible results from their administrations.

Speaking during the inauguration of the council chairmen and their deputies in Abuja, Wike said the new leaders must justify the confidence reposed in them by the electorate through effective governance and prudent management of public resources.

He reminded the chairmen that political victory comes with responsibility, stressing that they have entered into a covenant with the people who voted them into office.

According to the minister, governance at the local level must focus on improving the welfare of residents and delivering projects that directly impact communities.

Wike assured the chairmen that their statutory allocations would FCT Administration would closely monitor the utilisation of council funds to ensure strict compliance with financial regulations.

He particularly cautioned against any attempt by council chairmen to personally manage or withdraw public funds, noting that established civil service procedures must be followed at all times.

The minister also expressed concern over the persistent industrial actions by local government employees and primary school teachers, describing the situation as detrimental to education and grassroots administration.

He urged the council leaders to work closely with relevant stakeholders to address workers’ welfare and prevent disruptions that negatively affect residents.
