Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned that all illegal occupants in Abuja will be expelled as part of the move to combat criminality and kidnapping.

Speaking during his monthly ministerial press briefing yesterday, Wike declared that his administration is determined to secure the city and will not tolerate lawlessness under any guise.

“We are going to make sure that all illegal occupants are thrown out. It’s unfortunate because security is key and paramount. Any government that can’t provide security for its citizens shouldn’t be in government,” he said.

He challenged the narrative that poverty justifies criminal activities, arguing that it should not be used as a cover for making citizens uncomfortable or for kidnapping.

“We have to be careful about this poverty thing. All over the world, China, there are areas where you can see poverty, but that does not give you room to make people uncomfortable, kidnap them. No, we will not allow that, so let nobody use this poverty thing as an excuse,” he said.

The minister pointedly questioned those claiming indigenous ownership of lands, asking, “Those claiming to be the owners of this land, why are you not developing the land?

“We are going to make sure that all illegal occupants are thrown out. It is unfortunate because security is key and paramount. Any government that can’t provide security for its citizens should not be in government.”
