The Kano State Fire Service yesterday said a 32-year-old woman, Maimuna Shitu and her 18-month-old son, Harisu Muntari, died after they were found inside a well in Madarin Taba Village in Warawa local government area of the state.

The incident, which occurred on Friday morning, was disclosed in a statement issued by the spokesman of the service, Saminu Yusif.

According to the statement, the Fire Service Emergency Response Unit received a distress call from one Buhari Sa’idu between 7:06 a.m. and 9:40 a.m., prompting officials from the state headquarters to immediately mobilise to the scene.

“On arrival, they found a 32-year-old woman identified as Maimuna Shitu, who was said by her father to be suffering from mental illness, along with her 18-month-old son, Harisu Muntari, inside a well,” the statement said.

The victims were rescued unconscious but were later confirmed dead.

The service said the bodies were handed over to the ward head of the area, Yusuf Surajo, and the deceased woman’s father, Muhammad Shitu.

In a separate incident, the service added that it also recovered the body of an unidentified man believed to be about 40 years old from a well at Semegu by El-Sadeeq Bread in Kumbotso LGA. It said the incident was reported by one Hafizu Saminu.

The statement noted that firefighters from the state headquarters were dispatched to the scene where the victim was rescued unconscious but later confirmed dead.

His body was subsequently handed over to the Divisional Crime Officer, Salisu Salihu, of the Panshekara Police Division for further investigation.

It said investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the two incidents.

Director of the service, Alhaji Sani Anas, appealed to residents, especially parents and guardians, to ensure that wells are properly covered to prevent future tragedies.
