Workers’ Day: Federal Government Declares May 1 Public Holiday

The federal government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day celebration.

 

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who extended congratulations to workers across the country in recognition of their contributions to national development.

 

In a statement issued by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the government commended Nigerian workers for their dedication, resilience, and commitment to driving economic growth and prosperity.

 

The minister emphasised the importance of patriotism, productivity, and diligence, noting that these values remain essential for sustainable national development. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare, enhancing security, and creating an enabling environment for economic progress.

He commended Nigerian workers for their hard work and dedication to national development and noted that their efforts are essential for the nation’s growth and prosperity.

 

While wishing workers a fulfilling celebration, the federal government urged all Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding, and to use the occasion to reflect on the role of unity and hard work in building a stronger nation.

 

“I charge Nigerian workers to embrace patriotism, productivity, and dedication to their duties. These qualities, according to him are crucial for sustainable development.

 

“The federal government of Nigeria is committed to supporting the welfare and security of all workers and creating a favorable environment for economic growth,” the statement qouted the Minister as saying.
