With just over two weeks to go until the 2025 PremiumTrust Bank Abuja City International Half Marathon, the event has received a significant boost with official certification from World Athletics.
This endorsement solidifies the marathon’s international standing and underscores Nigeria’s increasing prominence in global road running.
The much-anticipated race is set to take place on Saturday, 6th December 2025, in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to a statement released by organisers on Friday, the certification follows a visit to Nigeria last month by World Athletics officials, led by Alessio Punzi, Head of Running and Mass Participation.
During his visit, Mr. Punzi reiterated World Athletics’ dedication to fostering the sport’s growth in Africa, especially in Nigeria. He commended the nation’s progress in developing mass-participation events and expressed robust support for the expanding running movement across the country.
Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management Limited (NSML), commented on the event’s importance, emphasising the economic and social benefits of long-distance running in Nigeria.
“Long-distance races have steadily become a source of economic growth for the nation. This year’s route has been carefully designed to allow residents and spectators to fully appreciate the brilliance and endurance of these runners.”
Mrs. Olopade further noted that the marathon not only champions healthy lifestyles and tourism but also stimulates local business activity throughout the city.
