Delegation from the World Bank has praised Gombe State for its performance in implementing development projects.
During an official visit led by the Bank’s country director for Nigeria, Matthew Verghis, the delegation lauded the administration of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, for demonstrating leadership and ownership in executing World Bank-supported programmes.
“We have observed that projects are performing even better in Gombe compared to many other states. One key factor behind this is the active engagement of the governor,” he said.
Verghis explained that the World Bank’s recent reforms, which place greater responsibility on state governments for project implementation, have enhanced accountability, performance, and long-term sustainability.
Under this approach, states access funding based on their readiness and ability to meet specific benchmarks.
According to him, Gombe’s achievements demonstrate that even states with limited resources can deliver impactful results through commitment and effective leadership.
The country director also highlighted the Bank’s evolving strategy in Nigeria, with a shift toward results-based financing and stronger collaboration with the private sector to scale development impact.
He commended the state’s progress in early childhood development, particularly in maternal health, child survival, nutrition, and education, stressing the need for sustained, coordinated interventions in the sector.
Responding, Governor Yahaya expressed appreciation to the World Bank for its continued support, describing the partnership as vital to the state’s development strides.
“Gombe is among the least-resourced states in terms of federal allocation, but with the support of partners like the World Bank, we have delivered projects that directly improve the lives of our people,” the governor said.
In a statement by his spokesman, Ismaila Uba Misilli, the governor disclosed that the state is benefiting from multiple World Bank-supported initiatives across key sectors, with additional projects underway.
The governor said his administration has expanded healthcare services across all 114 wards, ensuring at least one functional primary healthcare centre per ward.
He also assured the Bank of continued cooperation, transparency, and adherence to its framework on ownership and sustainability.
