The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has moved to quash recent media speculations, confirming it has yet to receive an official response from FIFA regarding its formal challenge to the eligibility of several Democratic Republic of Congo players. These players featured in the contentious 2026 World Cup African play-off match against the Super Eagles last month in Morocco.

Contrary to widespread reports suggesting FIFA had already dismissed Nigeria’s appeal following their defeat to DR Congo in the play-off final, the NFF has unequivocally stated that the matter remains under active consideration by the global football governing body.

Mohammed Sanusi, the NFF Secretary General, addressed the unfolding situation, affirming that no official communication or updates have been received from FIFA concerning the petition lodged by the Nigerian federation.

“The Nigeria Football Federation submitted a petition to FIFA concerning the eligibility of some players from DR Congo, and should there be any development, FIFA will communicate directly with the NFF,” Sanusi informed AIT.

He further clarified, “The NFF has not received any correspondence from FIFA indicating that our petition has been rejected. We have thoroughly checked our official email channels, and there is no such letter from FIFA.”

Sanusi expressed bewilderment at the source of the media claims, challenging those disseminating such information:

“I am unaware of where they obtained their information. If such a letter exists, they should present it, unless they possess an internal source within FIFA providing them with information ahead of official communication.”
