The 2026 World Cup has its first major pre-tournament shock, and it is happening off the pitch. Omar Artan, the reigning CAF Men’s Referee of the Year, was set to make history as the very first Somali official to referee at a World Cup. Instead, he was stopped by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at Miami International Airport, questioned for 11 hours, and sent back to Turkey due to “vetting concerns.”

FIFA officially dropped Artan from the tournament roster, stating they cannot interfere with host-country immigration laws. The decision has sparked global outrage, with many pointing to strict travel restrictions impacting Somali citizens.

Amid the heartbreak of missing football’s biggest stage, a massive gesture of solidarity has emerged. Hearing the news, a wealthy Somali businessman stepped forward to offer Artan $100,000 out of his own pocket. This generous gift is designed to fully compensate the 34-year-old official for his lost World Cup income. While top tournament referees typically earn between $50,000 and $75,000 for their work, this gesture ensures Artan will not suffer financially from the visa denial.

Despite losing his dream assignment just days before the opening match, Artan released a dignified statement, thanking FIFA and stating he remains focused on the future of his career.
