Former Super Eagles midfielder World Cup Opener: South Africa Crumbled Under Pressure, Not Tactics – Olisehand coach, Sunday Oliseh, has attributed South Africa’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to the immense pressure of the occasion rather than tactical shortcomings.

Speaking on his podcast after the Group A encounter at Mexico City’s iconic Estadio Azteca, Oliseh argued that Bafana Bafana struggled to cope with the magnitude of the event as the tournament got underway before more than 80,000 spectators.

Mexico secured victory through goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez, while South Africa finished the match with nine men following straight red cards for Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane.

“Finally, the World Cup is here,” Oliseh said.

“Eighty thousand fans at the Azteca, a beautiful opening ceremony and we all expected a romantic replay of 2010 in South Africa.

“What we actually witnessed was absolute psychological warfare.

“Mexico won 2-0, but this wasn’t about tactics. It was about pure pressure. South Africa didn’t lose because they are a poor side. Believe me. They lost because the stage simply seemed too big for them.”

The result handed the co-hosts a dream start to their World Cup campaign, while South Africa face an uphill task in their remaining group fixtures.
