German international defender Nico Schlotterbeck has been ruled out for several months after suffering a ligament injury to his left ankle, the German Football Association (DFB) confirmed on Monday, in a major setback ahead of the World Cup.

The Borussia Dortmund centre-back sustained the injury during training and subsequent medical assessments revealed ligament damage that will require an extended recovery period, effectively ending any immediate hopes of featuring in the tournament’s early stages.

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed disappointment over the development, describing the 25-year-old as a key figure in the squad’s defensive structure.

“Schlotti will be a huge miss for us on the pitch as an outstanding defender, especially because of his excellent build-up play,” Nagelsmann said. “It could have been his World Cup. Fortunately, he is a very positive character who is already looking ahead.”

Schlotterbeck has been an integral part of Germany’s recent defensive setup, valued for his left-footed distribution, composure under pressure, and ability to initiate attacks from the back.
