The National Population Commission (NPC) has launched the e-Birth Registration policy in Jigawa State to ensure integrated, inclusive and efficient birth registration across the state’s 27 local government areas.

The newly posted NPC Federal Commissioner for Jigawa State, Honourable Sulaiman Umar, launched the programme as part of activities to commemorate the 2026 World Population Day.

He noted that the e-Birth Registration policy is one of the initiatives introduced under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to guarantee every Nigerian a legal identity from birth and provide credible demographic data for national planning and development.

According to him, the e-registration initiative is easy to access and will help bridge the huge gap in birth and death registration in Nigeria, thereby providing efficient demographic data for better planning.

“As we launch it today, we have 287 NPC focal persons and 287 primary healthcare centres across all the political wards in the state, as well as 27 head offices where this e-birth registration can be accessed. This project will be handled in collaboration with all critical stakeholders.

“In collaboration with UNICEF, we have equipped all these centres with the required facilities for this e-registration initiative,” the commissioner said.

Mr Sulaiman further stated that the 2026 theme, “Realising the Hope and Aspirations of Young People-Today and for the Future”, is in tandem with President Bola Tinubu’s aspirations for youth education, economic empowerment and development.

He maintained that the celebration emphasises the collaboration and full participation of parents, communities, policymakers, religious leaders, donor partners, other critical stakeholders and the general public in improving birth registration, which currently stands at 57 per cent, and death registration, which is at 20 per cent.

“It is well known that having efficient demographic data is key to providing realistic and sustainable development plans that include everyone in society. Therefore, I call on everyone to join hands in repositioning our demographic data in Jigawa State and Nigeria,” Hon. Sulaiman stated.
