Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has confirmed that teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and fellow winger Nico Williams will be available for the country’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Cape Verde national football team on 15 June.
Yamal, who plays for FC Barcelona, and Williams of Athletic Bilbao both missed the closing stages of the domestic season due to hamstring injuries, but their expected return provides a major boost for the reigning European champions.
Víctor Muñoz is also expected to be fit for the opening fixture in Atlanta. However, all three players remained at Spain’s training base in the United States and did not travel to Mexico for Monday’s international friendly against Peru.
“We regret that they are not here with us, but the medical and fitness staff advised them to remain at the training camp,” De la Fuente said.
“All three should be available for the next match. They are progressing well in their recovery and are doing very well.”
Spain are among the favourites to win the World Cup, which is being staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The 18-year-old Yamal is expected to be one of the tournament’s standout performers.
After facing Cape Verde, Spain will take on Saudi Arabia national football team in Atlanta before concluding their group-stage campaign against Uruguay national football team in Guadalajara.
