Yobe State Primary Healthcare Board has convened a high-level risk communication and social mobilisation meeting to strengthen preparations and response measures against the recent cholera outbreak reported in neighbouring Borno State.

A statement by the board information officer, Adamu Sa’idu Abba, said the meeting was held on Friday at the board’s conference hall in Damaturu.

At the meeting, the director of Community and Family Health Services, Alh Ibrahim Mai Kasuwa, emphasised the importance of proactive planning, community engagement and coordinated action in safeguarding public health.

He urged all stakeholders to intensify an awareness campaign and strengthen surveillance systems aimed at preventing the spread of cholera in the state.

Highlighting the objectives of the meeting, the State Health Promotion Officer, Alh. Muhamad Kado Abubakar, explained the need for effective risk communication, community mobilisation and enhanced collaboration among partners to improve preparedness and response efforts.

Speaking on behalf of development partners, the representative of WHO reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting Yobe state cholera preparedness efforts through the provision of case management commodities, including cholera kits and essential medicines, strengthening surveillance activities down to local government areas and ward levels for early detection and reporting cases, and readiness to support cholera vaccination activities whenever the need arises.

The meeting therefore, reviewed preparation for other critical public health interventions, plans for the upcoming Big Catch-up (BCU) Immunisation Activities aimed at reaching children who may have missed routine vaccinations which will significantly improve the children’s healthcare across the state.
