Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) over its continued destruction of cannabis farms across Nigeria.

Sowore described the practice as economically wasteful, arguing that destroying cannabis crops worth millions of dollars was counterproductive at a time when the country is battling widespread poverty.

He made the remarks in a post shared on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday.

“It is idiotic NDLEA to wake up, put on uniforms, march into farms, and set economically viable crops worth millions of dollars ablaze while your country is drowning in multidimensional poverty,” Sowore wrote.

The activist called on the agency to stop destroying cannabis farms, describing the government’s approach as a “failed and outdated policy.”

“Stop destroying cannabis farms. Stop wasting enormous economic opportunities in the name of a failed and outdated policy,” he said.

Sowore further advocated for the legalisation and regulation of cannabis, arguing that Nigeria could benefit economically by developing the plant’s medicinal and industrial potential.

“Legalise and properly regulate cannabis. Invest in research, harness its legitimate medicinal and industrial potential, create jobs, generate revenue, and build an industry Nigerians can benefit from,” he wrote.

He concluded by condemning the continued destruction of cannabis farms as an ineffective response to the country’s economic challenges.

“You cannot burn your way out of poverty, foolish people!” Sowore  wrote.
