Young Nigerians Urged To Engage In Politics

Convener of Politics and Jollof, Alex Adekunle James, has called on educated young Nigerians to join politics and contribute ideas to transform the country.

At the 15th edition of Politics and Jollof, a civic engagement initiative for young Christians, James highlighted the importance of political participation.

The initiative, which has been running monthly for 15 months, provides a relaxed platform for discussing governance and national issues.

James noted that previous discussions have revolved around topics such as the effectiveness of democracy in Nigeria, and the latest focused on whether voters or politicians are responsible for the country’s current state. He emphasised that Politics and Jollof, a branch of Rivers in the Desert Nigeria, aims to mobilise Christians for national transformation, advocating for Christian values to extend into public life.

While primarily a Christian organisation, James confirmed they do not exclude individuals of other faiths, citing an interfaith dialogue involving both Christians and Muslims aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence.

He added that the initiative engages politicians, journalists, and public figures to educate young Nigerians about governance.

James expressed his hope that more young, educated Nigerians would step into political roles, noting their success in sectors like technology and entertainment but a lack of similar engagement in politics. He urged young citizens to channel their creativity and intelligence into governance, calling for courage among legislative aides to challenge their leaders when necessary.
