Chelsea legend Petr Cech has issued a candid warning to his former club, urging them to reconsider their current transfer strategy if they hope to lift major trophies like the Premier League or UEFA Champions League again.
The Blues are enduring a difficult season. Already out of the race for the Premier League title, they now face the real threat of missing out on next season’s Champions League qualification.
Currently sitting outside the top nine positions on the league table, consistency has been a major issue for the West London side.
In a chat with The Athletic, Cech pointed to a fundamental flaw in Chelsea’s recent approach: an almost exclusive focus on signing young, promising talents while neglecting the value of experienced campaigners.
“You have to look at what you want to achieve,” the former goalkeeper explained. “You can have young, talented players, and you can win, but it’s very rare that you manage to do that.”
Cech stressed that competing for the biggest prizes year after year requires a different mindset.
“If you want to win every season and compete every season, that does not go together. You have to change your philosophy. Certain things don’t go together because, in order to win a Champions League or a Premier League… these are really tough competitions, and you have to be consistent.”
According to Cech, the solution lies in building a strong core of seasoned professionals who can guide younger players through difficult moments.
“You need to have a strong core of the team. And then you can bring young, talented players who will grow faster and then will be held by the experienced players to help navigate them through difficult times when they come.”
His comments are particularly striking given the current makeup of Chelsea’s squad. At present, the club has only one outfield player over the age of 28 — defender Tosin Adarabioyo — and even he has not been a regular starter.
Cech’s message is clear: without a blend of youth and experience, Chelsea’s trophy drought may continue for longer than fans would hope.
