Youth Coalition Backs Service Chiefs, Knocks Ningi Over Sack Call

The Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL), a prominent umbrella body of youth groups across the six geopolitical zones, has thrown its weight behind the nation’s Service Chiefs, hailing their “strong commitment and tangible results” in the ongoing fight against banditry and terrorism.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its President General, Comrade Goodluck Ibem, CONYL criticised Senator Abdul Ningi over his recent comments questioning the competence of the Service Chiefs and calling for their removal.

The group described the senator’s remarks as “unfounded, unpatriotic, and morally questionable.”

The group accused the senator of presiding over a constituency plagued by underdevelopment, youth unemployment, and neglect during his time in public office, arguing that such governance failures contribute to insecurity by leaving young people vulnerable to criminal exploitation.

CONYL defended the performance of the Service Chiefs, citing numerous successful operations across the country that have led to the neutralisation of terrorists, recovery of arms, rescue of kidnapped victims, and restoration of peace in formerly volatile regions.

“The Service Chiefs have shown commendable professionalism and strategic focus. Their coordinated efforts with other security agencies have weakened insurgent networks and restored hope to many communities,” Ibem said.

The youth coalition warned against “divisive rhetoric” capable of demoralising security forces or emboldening criminal elements. It urged political leaders to offer constructive criticism that recognises progress made while supporting continued reforms in the security sector.

“We must not play politics with national security. Our armed forces need encouragement, not condemnation,” the statement added. “As youths, we reaffirm our confidence in the Service Chiefs and urge all Nigerians to rally behind them as they work to secure our nation.”

The group also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support of the military and reaffirmed its readiness to mobilise grassroots support for national security initiatives.

CONYL concluded by calling on all stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue and collaborative efforts to address the root causes of insecurity, including poverty, poor education, and lack of economic opportunities.
