Thousands of youths under the aegis of the Coalition for Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday staged a rally in Abuja, urging former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The protesters, who gathered at the former president’s office, carried placards and banners appealing to him to return to active politics, citing his democratic credentials and governance experience.
The demonstration caused early morning traffic disruption along the axis, as participants chanted slogans and danced while calling on Jonathan to join the 2027 race.
Some of the placards bore inscriptions such as “GEJ: Nigeria needs you” and other messages expressing support for his potential candidacy.
Addressing journalists, the group’s National President, Tom Ohikere, said the call followed extensive consultations across the country.
“Everywhere that we have visited in the course of our nationwide consultation over a period of six months, the clamour for his return to power has been loud and unmistakable,” he said.
Ohikere described the former president as a unifying figure, expressing confidence in his ability to contribute to national stability.
However, Jonathan was not present to receive the protesters, who described themselves as visitors.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official response from the former president, while his spokesperson had yet to comment on the development.
