Ahead of the 2027 elections, youths operating under the aegis of the Progressive Youth Movement (PYM), Oshodi Chapter, in Oshodi/Isolo local government area of Lagos State, have endorsed Mayowa Alakija as their consensus candidate for the Oshodi/Isolo State Constituency 1 seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
The endorsement was organised by the Progressive Youth Movement Oshodi Chapter without Alakija’s prior knowledge, saying the move was a result of the growing dissatisfaction with the quality of representation the current lawmaker is giving the constituency.
The event was attended by large crowds of youths who funded it independently to affirm their demand for “effective representation” over what they described as “bench warmers” and politicians, they said, are detached from the needs of the community.
PYM Convener Gideon Balogun, who announced the endorsement, described Alakija as a “visionary leader, strategist, and bridge-builder” tested in his role as Executive Secretary for Education under Local Government Chairman Otunba Kehinde Oloyede Almaroof, popularly known as Kendoo.
Balogun urged party leaders to heed the youths’ voices and reject impositions, vowing that Alakija would not step down as he did four years ago, when he yielded to pressure to Step down.
PYM Secretary-General Rafiu Adenopo emphasised that the gathering conveyed a broader message: constituents must assess whether they are “better off than four years ago,” answering with a “resounding no” due to perceived poor representation at Alausa.
Lagos State All Progressives Congress Youth Leader Muritala Seriki, who attended the gathering, lauded Alakija for his year-round party mobilisation, saying he is unlike some youths who are only active during elections.
Seriki highlighted Alakija’s loyalty after stepping down in the last election, his efficiency as one of Oshodi/Isolo’s youngest executive secretaries, and Kendoo’s youth-focused administration, which transformed Oshodi from its troubled past.
Seriki pledged to campaign vigorously for deserving young candidates like Alakija, defining leadership by impact rather than age.
