National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Zamfara State yesterday joined other states to hold the 2026 Corps Employers’ Workshop, with the stakeholders pledging stronger collaboration to improve corps members’ welfare and workplace experience.
The workshop, held under the theme “Fine-tuning Stakeholders’ Collaboration to Enhance Corps Members’ Welfare and Workplace Experience”, brought together NYSC officials, heads of government and private establishments, security agencies, and other employers of corps members in the state.
Declaring the workshop open, the Zamfara State coordinator of NYSC, Mallam Muhammad Lawan Ahmed, said the forum was strategic for addressing recurring challenges that affect corps members during their service year.
Mallam Ahmed noted that while corps members remain critical to service delivery in schools, hospitals, and other MDAs across Zamfara, many still face difficulties ranging from poor accommodation to underutilization at their Places of Primary Assignment, PPAs.
Participants focused on three major areas, Corps Member Welfare: Improving accommodation, living conditions, and overall well-being of corps members posted across the state, Workplace Support: Tackling the rejection of corps members, underutilization, and ensuring employers provide a conducive environment that encourages productivity and State Support: Highlighting the Zamfara State Government’s ongoing welfare package for corps members. The state currently provides additional allowances of ₦20,000 for regular corps members serving in ministries, and up to ₦150,000 for medical doctors serving in the state.
The Coordinator commended the Zamfara State Government under Governor Dauda Lawal for its consistent support to the scheme, including the recent 150% increase in state allowances and efforts to improve facilities at the orientation camp.
He stressed that such interventions have made Zamfara one of the most supportive states for corps members’ welfare and security.
“Most schools and hospitals in the state will not operate optimally without corps members,” Mallam Ahmed said, adding that corps members have also initiated community development projects such as boreholes, toilet facilities, mini-libraries, and skills acquisition programmes in their host communities.
Mallam Ahmed urged employers to see corps members as partners in development and not just as temporary staff.
He called for closer synergy between NYSC, local government chairmen, traditional rulers, and security agencies to guarantee the safety and effective deployment of corps members.
The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Tasiu Musa Shinkafi, who represented the state government at the event, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to the welfare and safety of corps members as part of the Governor’s Rescue Agenda.
Employers at the workshop pledged to review their internal policies to ensure better accommodation, mentorship, and proper utilization of corps members in line with NYSC guidelines.
The 2026 Corps Employers’ Workshop is expected to produce resolutions that will guide NYSC and employers nationwide in strengthening support structures for corps members throughout their service year.
