The 2025 edition of the Zenith Bank Delta Principal Cup kicked off in Asaba with a thrilling match between Omu Boys Secondary School, Ibusa, and Zappa Basic Secondary School, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
Omu Boys took the lead in the 11th minute of the first half but were unable to maintain their advantage despite several scoring opportunities. Zappa Basic Secondary managed to level the game towards the end of the first half and then took a 2-1 lead. However, Omu Boys fought back in the second half, equalising to make it two goals apiece.
The captains of both teams expressed their satisfaction with the officiating and praised their players for their efforts. Captain Bernard of Omu Boys remarked.
“The match went well, and glory be to God that our opponents did not triumph over us. Our next match will be better as we set our sights on the Principal Cup.”
Eze Ifechukwudi of Zappa Basic Secondary School added, “We expected a straight win, but the match ended in a draw. Nevertheless, we hope to bring the Principal Cup home.”
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, commended Zenith Bank for its commitment to corporate social responsibility through the promotion of youth football. Represented by Dr Kingsley Emu, Secretary to the State Government, he stated, “Without a doubt, football is the biggest sport in Nigeria. I am pleased that Zenith Bank, in collaboration with the Delta State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, has consistently organised this tournament, which serves as a breeding ground for future stars.”
He further expressed hopes for this year’s competition to match the excitement of prior editions, praising Zenith Bank for its investment in youth football development and urging the bank to consider establishing a sports academy in the state.
Zenith Bank Zonal Branch Manager, Dr Ifeanyi Atama, reiterated the partnership’s aim to unlock the potential of the youth for community development.
Among those present at the opening match were several state commissioners, including the State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs Rose Ezewu, and representatives from the Delta State Football Association.
