Zulum Inaugurates Committee On Alau Dam Collapse

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has constituted a committee to ascertain the cause of the collapse of Alau Dam which resulted in the flood in Maiduguri Metropolis and surrounding local government areas.

Inaugurating the 26-member committee at the Council Chamber of the Government House in Maiduguri yesterday, Governor Zulum said the 38-year-old dam had been supplying water for drinking and irrigation in the Lake Chad Basin.

He said the committee members are to find out the immediate and remote causes of the collapse on September 10, 2024.

Zulum lamented the submerging of 40 percent of the metropolis’s landmass, including hectares of farmlands in three local government areas.

Besides the cause of collapse, he added that the committee members should recommend appropriate and concrete measures to check reoccurence.

Chairman of the committee, Engr. Abba Garba thanked him for finding them worthy to serve, saying the terms of reference would be complied in four weeks.
