One person was killed and six others injured in a multiple-vehicle crash that occurred at Damagum town, in Fune Local Government Area of Yobe State, involving a trailer truck with registration number MUS 791 XH.
Spokesman of the Yobe State Police Command, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, disclosed in a statement that the six injured victims were later referred to the local Teaching Hospital for further medical attention.
Abdulkarim said several passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries, while a 40-year-old Dahiru Maikudi of Yaskawel was medically examined and certified dead at the General Hospital, Damagum.
“Preliminary investigations by security operatives revealed that upon reaching a point within Damagum town, the driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a Mitsubishi Canter in motion ahead of him, with eighteen occupants, bearing registration number AA 641 PKM, driven by Usman Muhammad, 40, of Yaskawel Village,” he said.
Police said following the incident, angry youths took to the streets protesting what they described as incessant accidents on the highway, which have claimed many lives.
Operatives immediately moved in and dispersed the crowd peacefully to prevent criminal elements from exploiting the situation.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, commiserates with the family of the deceased and sympathises with the injured.
He has directed the Divisional Police Officer to collaborate with the local government authorities to develop a durable solution to forestall future occurrences.
The CP further urged motorists to adhere to traffic regulations, refrain from speeding, and drive with caution when approaching towns or busy areas.
He vowed that anyone found violating traffic laws would be held accountable and decisively prosecuted.
The CP also urged the public to refrain from conducting market activities near the highway to minimise the risk of accidents.
