A Magistrate Court in Bolade, Oshodi, has sentenced 13 people to three months’ imprisonment each after they were found guilty of indiscriminate refuse dumping in violation of Lagos State’s environmental sanitation laws.

The convicts pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful waste disposal, prompting the court to convict and sentence them immediately.

Those sentenced are Jamiu Abdulkareem, Nwosu Martin, Abduljamiu Wasiu, Habeeb Muhammed, Kolawole Elijah, Anum Musa, Adeniyi Jamiu, Taiwo Olaniyi, Ali Muhammed, Paul Yaya, Damilare Adebowale, Ojo Fatai and Abah Musa.

Reacting to the ruling, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the convictions reflect the government’s resolve to enforce environmental regulations and improve sanitation across the state.

“The convictions underscore the commitment of the Lagos State Government to enforcing environmental laws and maintaining a clean, safe and healthy environment for all residents,” he said.

The sentencing comes amid intensified efforts by the state government to curb indiscriminate waste disposal. Earlier this month, Lagos inaugurated a task force comprising members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) to monitor bus stops, motor parks and major roads for sanitation violations.

However, the initiative has generated debate following concerns that transport union members may be assuming enforcement responsibilities traditionally handled by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC).
