The embattled 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has announced the suspension of his planned Eid-el-Ftr Durbar in Kano, citing security concerns and advice from stakeholders.

Bayero made the announcement in a late-night video statement on Wednesday, marking a significant shift after previously notifying the Kano State Police Command about his intention to stage a separate Sallah Durbar.

His planned event had come shortly after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf authorized the 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, to commence preparations for the traditional festivities.

In the video, Bayero explained that the decision followed consultations with elders, scholars, and members of his ‘Emirate’ Council. He stressed that while the Durbar is an important cultural event, it should not be held at the expense of peace and stability.

“The Eid Durbar is not a do-or-die affair. If it poses any risk of unrest or disorder, then it is necessary to suspend it,” he said.

He urged Kano residents to accept the decision in the interest of peace and called on Muslims to use the festive period to strengthen family and community ties. He also congratulated the Muslim faithful on the successful completion of the Ramadan fast and prayed for divine blessings.

The cancellation comes amid the ongoing tussle over the Kano Emirate throne, with Emir Bayero and Emir Sanusi II both laying claims to the throne following political and legal disputes for about 10 months now.
