National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has said that 2.7 million Nigerians are displaced due to flooding and other climate-related factors, reiterating its commitment towards tackling the impact of climate change.

In a statement made available to LEADERSHIP Friday yesterday in Abuja, the NCFRMI, federal commissioner, Tijani Aliyu Ahmed, stated this while speaking during the 14th Summit of the Global Forum for Migration and Development (GFMD) held in Geneva, with the theme: “The Impact of Climate Change on Human Mobility.”

He said the federal government is committed to tackling the impact of climate change on human mobility.

Addressing delegates from over 100 countries Ahmed said the Federal Government of Nigeria is dedicated to proactive and humanitarian measures in addressing the adverse effects of climate change on human mobility in Nigeria and the surrounding region.

He said GFMD is an international, states-led informal platform, which helps to shape global debate on migration and development.

He highlighted some of Nigeria’s strategies and actions aimed at the prevention of climate-related hazards, as well as providing humanitarian intervention to affected populations.

“Among the strategies include the recent adoption of a national action plan on the provision of durable solutions to displaced persons by Nigeria, as well as the commission’s novel innovation.

“The Go Green programme, with components such as the green living shelters, tree planting drive, climate resilient infrastructure initiatives, eco-friendly cooking solutions, and green education projects,” he said.

He further submitted that the strategies serve as a response to tackle the urgent needs of Persons of Concern (POCs) who have been impacted by climate events through initiatives that not only provide durable solutions, but also address and combat climate change, through climate-friendly practices and initiatives.
