The reigning African Player of the Year and Atalanta winger, Ademola Lookman, will be unavailable for Nigeria’s final World Cup qualifying match against Benin Republic on Tuesday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The Nigerian star received his second consecutive yellow card during their 2-1 victory against Lesotho in Polokwane, South Africa, on Friday. Lookman was earlier booked on September 9 in a 1-1 draw against South Africa in Bloemfontein, and his second yellow card on Friday means he is automatically suspended for the crucial match against Benin.

The Super Eagles took a significant step closer to 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification with their win against Lesotho. Troost-Ekong gave Nigeria a perfect start in the 55th minute by converting a penalty following a handball in the Lesotho penalty area. Substitute Akor Adams doubled the lead with a clinical finish in the 80th minute, but Lesotho responded in the 83rd minute with a goal from Kalake. Nevertheless, the Eagles held firm to secure the vital three points.

However, with Benin Republic winning their match away to Rwanda, Nigeria remains third in Group C, and with only one game left in the group, their fate is not entirely in their own hands.

Improving goal difference is now crucial. Nigeria trails both Benin and South Africa, meaning that scoring more goals and maintaining a clean sheet could prove decisive if teams finish level on points.
