A coalition under the aegis of the Goodluck Presidential Support Campaign Group has called on former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The group said the appeal followed wide consultations across the country and engagement with key stakeholders.
Ata press conference in Abuja yesterday, the director-general of the group, Jeff Okoi, said Nigeria needs experienced and stabilising leadership at this critical time.
“We are united by a shared commitment to national renewal and a firm belief that our country must move forward with purpose, stability and inclusive leadership,” Okoi said.
He described the moment as “defining” in Nigeria’s history, stressing the need for courage and decisive action.
According to him, the country is facing “serious challenges” that demand national unity, economic revitalisation and restored global confidence.
“These are not ordinary times; they require a leader with proven capacity, calm disposition and a clear vision for national renewal,” he added.
Okoi said the group’s call was “solemn and patriotic”, aimed at rescuing Nigeria from uncertainty, division and stagnation.
He noted that Jonathan’s leadership record, respect for the rule of law and commitment to democratic values set him apart.
“Dr Jonathan remains a statesman of uncommon humility, a symbol of democratic stability and a respected global ambassador of peace,” he said.
The group also raised concerns over what it described as the shrinking democratic space and concentration of political power in the country.
“Democracy thrives on inclusiveness, healthy competition and fairness — not suppression,” Okoi stated
He added that Nigeria needed leadership that would prioritise economic recovery, strengthen security, empower youths and drive institutional reforms.
Okoi said Jonathan’s leadership qualities — “steady, inclusive and people-centred” — make him a suitable candidate to unite the country.
He called on Nigerians across political, ethnic and religious divides to support the movement.
“We are not merely presenting a candidate; we are advancing a national vision anchored on unity, integrity and shared prosperity,” he said.
The group also urged the media to uphold professionalism in reporting on its activities, while assuring that it remained mobilised to achieve its goal ahead of 2027. “Nigeria shall rise again,” Okoi declared.
