The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stepped up effort to calm nationwide anxiety after the release of the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections triggered widespread public concern, especially over the dates proposed for the polls.
In a statement signed on Friday by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the commission clarified that the controversial dates were not arbitrarily chosen but were crafted strictly in line with the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections 2022.
According to the guidelines introduced in 2019, paragraph 2 specifically provides that:
“Election to the office of president and vice president, as well as the National Assembly, shall hold on the third Saturday of February of any general elections year, while election to the office of governor and deputy governor and the state Houses of Assembly shall hold two weeks thereafter.”
Following this legal framework, INEC scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for Saturday, February 20, 2027, while the governorship and state assembly elections were fixed for Saturday, March 6, 2027.
However, the dates ignited concern among citizens and stakeholders who noted that the timetable appears to coincide with significant national observances, sparking fears about voter turnout, logistical strain, and overall electoral participation.
INEC acknowledged the concerns and emphasised that it remained sensitive to all issues that may affect voter participation and the smooth conduct of the polls.
The commission further said it had already begun a round of consultations with relevant bodies and is open to seeking legislative intervention if adjustments are deemed necessary, provided such changes remain consistent with constitutional and statutory provisions.
While insisting that the timetable was constitutionally grounded, INEC’s willingness to consider modifications signals responsiveness to public outcry.
The commission assured Nigerians that any further decisions would be communicated promptly and transparently.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and the credible conduct of the 2027 general elections, stating that it remains focused on delivering an electoral process that reflects the will of Nigerians.
