A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Buba Galadima, has warned that Nigerians may respond decisively at the ballot box in 2027 if prevailing economic hardship and insecurity persist, drawing parallels with the 2015 election when the All Progressives Congress (APC) defeated President Goodluck Jonathan.
Galadima spoke on Thursday during an appearance on ‘Politics Today’, a Channels Television current appairs programme, where he criticised the policies of the ruling APC and dismissed official claims that living conditions have improved under the current administration.
Warning against what he described as growing intolerance for dissent, Galadima cautioned authorities not to underestimate public sentiment.
“Look at young men in Kano who go to the radio to make an opinion. They have been arrested and sent to jail. Sometimes tried in the night by judges who are forced to jail them,” he said.
“This thing start small, small. You don’t know how they can blossom and become something else. They shouldn’t play. They shouldn’t presume that Nigerians are gullible and that they cannot react.”
He argued that the 2015 presidential election underscored Nigerians’ readiness to vote out an incumbent government over insecurity.
“They should remember, and they know better, that when things got to less than 10 per cent of the situation we find ourselves in in 2015, Nigerians rose to the occasion and removed that government,” Galadima said.
“If you can remove Jonathan’s government for a simple insecurity in the North-East, what would you be doing to the APC government? I think we have to cut them into pieces.”
The NNPP chieftain also accused the government of deliberately undermining agriculture through import policies and rising production costs, particularly the price of fertiliser.
“This government has killed agriculture deliberately, disenfranchising farmers who are 75 per cent of the Nigerian population,” he said. “You have to buy a bag of fertiliser for ₦60,000 to ₦70,000.”
Rejecting the administration’s assertion that hardship was easing, Galadima insisted that farming activity—especially in rural areas—was declining.
“How can you disenfranchise 75 per cent of your population for the interest of one contractor or one supporter? The massive importation of grains… Now this year, I travelled to Maiduguri… there is nobody doing any dry farming,” he said.
“Let the government send researchers to find out now… If there is no famine… all the rice mills, over 1,000 of them established during Buhari’s time, will be killed.”
His remarks come amid intensifying political debates ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition figures escalating criticism of the APC’s economic reforms and security record.
LEADERSHIP had earlier reported that opposition leaders convened a world press conference on Thursday to assess the state of the nation at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja, where they strongly criticised the Electoral Act 2026, recently assented to by President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking on behalf of the opposition, the National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ajuji Ahmed, described the new law as having been “hurriedly” signed, warning that it contained loopholes that could be exploited to manipulate the 2027 general election.
The opposition specifically criticised Sections 60(3) and 84 of the Act, which relate to electronic transmission of results and the mode of party primaries. Section 60(3) provides for electronic transmission of polling unit results to the IReV portal but allows manual collation where transmission fails, while Section 84(2) limits party nominations to direct primaries or consensus.
Opposition leaders called on the National Assembly to urgently commence amendments to what they described as “obnoxious provisions” in the law.
They also condemned the conduct and outcome of last Saturday’s Federal Capital Territory Area Council election, warning that it could be a sign of what Nigerians should expect in the 2027 general elections.
