Ahead of the coming 2027 general elections, an umbrella body of Igbo youth organisations, Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has warned that any attempt to rig the polls would be met with dire consequences.

To ensure free, fair and transparent conduct of the polls and credible outcomes, the group has perfected arrangements to embark on mobilisation and sensitisation of the political stakeholders, including politicians and electorate in the zone to abhor any form of rigging.

The president-general of the organisation, Comrade Goodluck Ibem, who stated the group’s plans for a free, fair, transparent elections in the South East during the coming general election warned that “enough is enough” of election rigging in the zone.

He said that the initiative was born out of the unwavering commitment of his group contribute to “the protection of democracy, the sanctity of the ballot, and the fundamental rights of our people as guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

He continued “COSEYL unequivocally states that the era of electoral manipulation, intimidation, and subversion of the people’s mandate must come to a decisive end. Enough is enough.

“Under Section 14(2)(c) of the Constitution, it is clearly provided that “the participation by the people in their government shall be ensured.” Any attempt to rig elections or manipulate electoral outcomes is therefore a direct assault on the Constitution and a betrayal of Nigeria’s democratic foundation.

“Furthermore, Section 1(2) of the Constitution explicitly declares that “the Federal Republic of Nigeria shall not be governed… except in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution.”

Electoral malpractice, rigging, and undue interference in the electoral process are unconstitutional, illegal, and unacceptable”, Ibem stated further.

He said that his group would mobilize, educate, and empower citizens across the South East to defend their votes within the ambit of the law.

He also said that electorate would be sensitised to resist electoral fraud and manipulation and demand accountability and transparency throughout the electoral process.

“We issue a clear, firm, and unequivocal warning to any individual, group, or institution contemplating any form of electoral malpractice in the South East: Stay off our zone. The will of the people is not negotiable and will not be compromised.

“The people of the South East are fully prepared, within the confines of the law, to vehemently resist any attempt to rig or subvert their collective democratic will.

“We also call on all security agencies to be guided strictly by their constitutional responsibilities. Under Section 215 of the Constitution and other relevant laws, security agencies are mandated to maintain law and order—not to aid or abet illegality.

“Let it be clearly stated: Security operatives must not allow themselves to be used as instruments of electoral fraud. Their loyalty is to the Constitution and the Nigerian people—not to partisan interests. Any action that undermines free, fair, and credible elections is a violation of their oath of office.

“Additionally, Section 42 of the Constitution guarantees freedom from discrimination, while Section 39 and Section 40 guarantee freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. These rights empower citizens to lawfully participate in the democratic process and reject electoral injustice.

“We stands firmly on the side of democracy, justice, and the rule of law. We will continue to engage all relevant stakeholders—including electoral bodies, civil society, traditional institutions, and the international community—to ensure that the 2027 elections reflect the true will of the Nigerian people”,  he also stated.

The COSEYL leader described the coming 2027 election as defining moment for our democracy.

He insisted that the people will no longer be silenced, and, will no longer be ignored, and that their votes will prevail.
