The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Akwa Ibom State, Prof. Anugbum Onuoha, has warned political parties against actions that could violate the Electoral Act as preparations intensify for candidate nominations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Onuoha issued the warning during his maiden media interaction in Uyo, where he urged stakeholders to uphold integrity and fairness in the electoral process.

He said political parties must ensure that their primaries and related activities reflect “substantial compliance” with electoral guidelines, stressing the need for credible and acceptable outcomes.

The REC noted that while the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is committed to credible elections, no electoral process can be absolutely perfect.

“Only God can guarantee a 100 percent free, fair and transparent exercise,” he said.

He called on the media, civil society organisations, political parties, and voters to actively participate in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.

Prof. Onuoha also cautioned against premature campaigning, warning that political activities ahead of the official timetable would attract sanctions under the law.

“Any form of early campaigning in violation of the Electoral Act would not be tolerated by the commission,” he warned.

He urged political actors to operate strictly within the provisions of the law to ensure peaceful and orderly elections.

The REC further assured that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would continue to work with stakeholders to strengthen voter education, public enlightenment, and the credibility of the electoral system.

He also appealed to the media to maintain professionalism and accuracy in their reportage, describing the press as a critical partner in sustaining electoral transparency.
