Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has urged politicians seeking to succeed him in 2027 to stop attacking him and instead tell residents what they intend to do for the state.

Makinde, who said he would not be on the ballot in the governorship election, asked his political opponents to focus on presenting their plans to the people rather than criticising his administration.

“I have seen a few people who said they wanted to become the governor. Some said they brought me into politics, some even said Seyi Makinde didn’t do this or that.

“I myself don’t want to contest for governorship. The people of Oyo State have given me the opportunity to serve them. You too go and tell them what you intend to do for Oyo State. Stop abusing Seyi Makinde. Abuse yourselves, because I’m not in the league to contest for governor. Why is it that, ‘Seyi Makinde didn’t do this one or that,’ that you keep saying? I’ve done all I can do, so next time when people come talking, tell them what you want to know is what will they do differently. Let them sort those things out, so that any mistakes we make, they can correct it in the best interest of the people of Oyo State.”

Makinde said prospective candidates should be questioned about how they intend to address areas where his administration may not have performed well.

He urged the electorate to scrutinise the plans and programmes of the candidates and determine what they intend to do differently.

Makinde, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was first elected governor of Oyo State in 2019 and re-elected in 2023. He is currently serving his second consecutive term, which ends in 2027.
