The Benue State Environmental Sanitation Authority, BENSESA, has given mass burial for two hundred and seventy-one unclaimed corpses in the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi.
Speaking with LEADERSHIP on Monday in Makurdi, Benue State Environmental Sanitation Authority’s Information Officer, Simon Iorver, said, as a state government agency that deals with environmental matters, they bury such corpses when the police write to them to conduct the burial.
According to BENSESA, “It is normal, you know, BENSESA deals with the environment. We buried unidentified or unclaimed corpses when the police wrote to us. The document is called ‘Corona’; they gave it to us for burial. We are to carry the corpses and bury them”
Iorver stated further, “Most of these mortuaries you see around within the state, if they have so many of the unclaimed corpses, they write to us for burial after they must have done all the necessary things that have to be done, then they write to us for us to carry the unclaimed or unidentified corpses and bury them”
“There is no environmental hazard, but the unclaimed corpses are waste, and it must be disposed of where it is supposed to be disposed of. The unclaimed corpses at the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi mortuary were 271 and were all buried in the same place at the weekend,” he said.
However, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Makurdi, in a notice issued by the Head of Clinical Services, Dr Uche Azuka, recently informed the public to visit the Centre’s mortuary for identification and claims before Friday, 26 June 2026, after the remaining unclaimed corpses will be buried.
