At least four persons have been confirmed dead in an accident which occurred Monday night at the Ijebu-Imushin axis of Ogun East Senatorial District along the Ijebu Ode – Ore expressway.
Our correspondent gathered that the accident, which occurred at about 11: 16.p.m. involved a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number plate: BDJ 482 XC and a blue MAN Diesel truck, marked: RSH 969 XC, said to belong to Julius Berger Plc with a BODY CODE: B8962.
Eye witnesses at the Ijebu-Imushin Junction, where the accident occurred told LEADERSHIP that the truck had developed a mechanical fault and was being towed to a safer place when the unfortunate incident occurred.
The source explained that the chain with which the truck was being towed got detached from the towing vehicle, thereby, making the truck remain stationary on the expressway.
Unfortunately, the Toyota Hiace bus, driving on a high speed, unknowingly rammed into the stationary truck, thereby, resulting in the instant death of the four occupants; two males and two females.
“Having realised that all the people in the Toyota bus had died, the driver of the towing vehicle, who was earlier in our midst, suddenly disappeared and fled the scene, leaving the truck behind”, the source added.
The public relations officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Sector Command, Odunsi Afolabi, also confirmed the incident on Tuesday through a terse Situation Report (SITREP) which he later made available to journalists.
Afolabi attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speeding on the part of the driver of the Toyota Hiace bus, stressing that all individuals in the bus sustained fatal injuries and were confirmed dead at the scene.
“Regrettably, all four individuals involved in the crash comprising two male adults and two female adults sustained fatal injuries and were confirmed dead at the scene.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the crash was caused by Speed Violations (SPV). FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene within eight minutes of being alerted.”
He, however, disclosed that corpses of the deceased victims have been evacuated and deposited at the state hospital mortuary in Ijebu Ode, while the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Imushin Division, has taken custody of the vehicles and the case for further investigation.
