4 Die As Truck Rams Into Moving Vehicle On Ibadan-Lagos Expressway

Four people have been confirmed dead, while one other sustained injuries in an accident that occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway yesterday.

The accident, which occurred at the Straight Gate axis of Ogere Remo, in Remo North local government area at 4 a.m, involved a blue colour Mitsubishi Cabstar with registration plate number: FGE 753 XA and a 30-tonne HOWO truck marked: T-695 KT.

The spokesperson of the Ogun Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Afolabi Odunsi, who confirmed the accident to newsmen in Abeokuta, the state capital, attributed the accident to fatigue and speed violation (SP) on the part of the driver of the Mitsubishi Cabstar.

The pictorial illustration of the accident scene provided by the FRSC, indicated that the driver of the Mitsubishi Cabstar mini truck rammed into the HOWO truck from the rear while on top speed.

He said eight persons were involved in the crash, with four male adults killed on the spot. Odunsi who is FRSC chief route commander added that one male adult sustained injuries, while three others escaped unhurt.

“Preliminary investigation indicated that the crash was caused by speed violation (SPV) and wrong overtaking (WOV). The Mitsubishi driver, reportedly travelling at high speed, rammed into the moving truck while attempting to overtake it.

“Fatigue was also identified as a contributing factor, as the driver was reportedly fatigued during the journey,” he said.

The FRSC rescue team received the report at 0433hrs and arrived at the scene at 0439hrs, recording a six-minutes response time”, he said.

Odunsi however, disclosed that the injured victim was rescued to a private hospital in Ogere for medical attention, while corpses of the deceased were deposited at the morgue of another private hospital in Ipara Remo, with the crashed vehicles handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) in Isara Division, “for further investigation and necessary action”.

The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi therefore urged motorists to avoid speeding, fatigue and unsafe overtaking, especially during early-morning journeys.
