In a tragic early morning blaze, four members of the same family were burnt to death when fire engulfed their home at Kundila Layin Baba Impossible in Tarauni Local Government Area, Kano State, on Wednesday.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its spokesperson, ACFO Saminu Yusif, noting that the blaze was reported at about 4:13 a.m. by one of its personnel, HFS Abba Datti.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the ground-floor building—measuring approximately 40 by 30 feet and used as a dwelling—completely overtaken by flames. The fire destroyed two bedrooms, a parlour, a kitchen, and a toilet.
The statement revealed that five occupants were trapped inside the house, including 43-year-old father Shodandi, his 30-year-old wife Rafi’a, and their two daughters—three-year-old Mardiya and one-and-a-half-year-old Yusira—all of whom perished in the inferno.
Miraculously, a 12-year-old boy, Aminu Shodandi, was rescued alive by firefighters, bringing a glimmer of hope to an otherwise devastating tragedy.
The Fire Service extended condolences to the bereaved family and urged residents to exercise heightened caution when handling fire-related materials, especially during the dry harmattan season.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was likely triggered by a mosquito coil the family had lit in their parlour before going to bed.
