A total of 573,519 Nigerians have applied for the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) job, LEADERSHIP can report.
LEADERSHIP reports that the chairman board of the service led by the minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, Olawale Edun, approved the recruitment of 3,927 officers for the Service.
The recruitment opened between December 27, 2024 and closed on January 2nd, 2025.
The national public relations officer of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada confirmed the total number of applicants but did not give further details.
He said “I want to break down the number of people that applied, we have two categories of officers, we have the support staff that are professionals, and we have the general duty.
“For the general duty, we have three categories of ranks. For the general duty under the superintendent cadre, we have 249, 218, 000 candidates that applied.
“Under the superintendent cadre support staff cadre, we have 27, 722,000 with HNDs and University degrees.”
“For the inspector cadres, those expected to apply with their National Certificate for Education, NCE or National Diploma, we have 115, 634 applying for the general duty, and for support staff, we have 12, 952.
“As for the customs assistants, these are those who are supposed to come in with secondary school certificates, there are two categories, those who have basic five credit results with Maths and English, and those without Maths and English. For the general duty we have 153, 593, 000, while the support staff we have 14, 400.”
LEADERSHIP, however, disclosed that the vacancy announcement made by the Service, is that the applicant must be a Nigerian citizen by birth.
Must have a valid National Identification Number (NIN).
Must not have any criminal record or be under investigation.
Academic requirements for the three cadres of officers vary. For the Senior (Superintendent) Cadre, the NCS said applicants must have:
University degree or HND (Higher National Diploma) or equivalent from a well-recognised higher institution
NYSC discharge Certificate of Exemption Certificate.
For the Inspectorate Cadre, the applicants must National Diploma (ND) or Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) from any Approved Institution.Applicants for the third, Customs Assistant Cadre, are expected to have O’Level (WAEC or NECO).
In addition to the above, the NCS said all applicants must be physically and mentally fit and will be required to provide evidence of medical fitness from a recognised government hospital.
