Eighteen of 32 House of Assembly candidates of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Rivers State have passed a vote of confidence on the party’s governorship candidate, Senator Magnus Abe.
Abe had a fortnight ago announced the withdrawal of his petition challenging the declaration of Siminalaye Fubara of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as winner of the March 18, 2023 governorship election in the state, saying his decision was in the interest of people of the state.
In a communique made available to LEADERSHIP Weekend in Port Harcourt yesterday, the 18 SDP candidates declared their unalloyed support for Abe.
The communique was signed by the forum’s chairman and acting secretary, Hon. Innocent Ajaelu and Hon. Igoma Isephemugh and 16 others.
It reads in part: “After a critical review and evaluation of the political events before, during and after the governorship and House of Assembly elections in Rivers State and the recent withdrawal of the petition from the tribunal by Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, we hereby resolve and state as follows: That Senator Magnus Ngei Abe is an outstanding, exceptional and seasoned politician and leader of our time.
“That the peculiar disposition of non-violence, rational and issue-based interface displayed by Abe greatly enhanced and ensured the mitigation of violence and reprisals despite every provocation experienced before, during and after the election in Rivers State and this must be commended.
“We are solidly behind the decision of our leader, Magnus Ngei Abe, for withdrawing his petition as we believe that it was done in utmost good faith and in the collective interest of the entire Rivers State and beyond.”
